First things first: what is SUBSTANCE? The short answer is that it's an online magazine and a shop, with a community of contributors providing content for both. But there’s much more to it than that.

OstrichWe’ve lived through a revolution — the internet. It changed the way we connect, consume, interact and enjoy. Life will never be the same. But there’s a downside. Yes, the internet gave us freedom, but somewhere along the line, someone forgot to switch on the quality control. One of the greatest forms of communication is often pitched at the same level as a chat with your mates. Everyone is telling anyone who’ll listen what they did last night, how they're feeling, right now, this very second.

Nothing wrong with any of that, but there’s another way, improving on what is out there, combining youth culture with heavyweight journalism, photography and design. HorseYes, the SUBSTANCE community is hugely important to what we do, but it’s not a free for all. Unlike YouTube or blogging culture, contributions to the magazine will subject to that old-fashioned idea — editing. Same thing goes for the designers working one limited edition one-offs for the SUBSTANCE shop. Think of it as a good thing. It means sharper content and better products. This version of SUBSTANCE is only a pop-up site. The full version launches early next year. If you want to contribute, we’d love to hear from you — e-mail us at collab@substance.tv.

The internet has incredible powers to build community. Communities that are bigger and stronger than a corporation. Together we can build something beautiful: a place where ideas are currency. Let’s collaborate to accumulate. It's time to give the internet what it's been missing. Something big enough to matter, yet small enough to capture the zeitgeist. It’s time for some SUBSTANCE.Be the media
